Side Curl

Level out your hips.

Level out your hips.

This exercise works on the muscles at the side of your waist. It helps where one hip is higher than the other, or where your posture is pulled to one side.

Regaining control of these muscles will help ensure your weight is evenly distributed across your horse’s back, from left to right.

Where you have had a problem of this type, your horse might have struggled to balance your weight comfortably. It might have braced, and developed its own (negative) patterns of compensation. It might have found it difficult to work on one rein, or found one particular canter transition difficult.

You might also have had problems with a feeling that your stirrups are not both at the same length. Or you might have found that your saddle has a tendency to slip to one side.

This exercise will help your horse to work more symmetrically, but you might need to correct your horse’s muscle imbalances as well!
