Proprioceptive Exercise 4

Develop an awareness of when your ribcage is positioned correctly.

Proprioceptive Exercise 4 also works with the alignment of the upper body and the straightness of the spine. This time, it happens through building awareness of the positioning of your ribcage. Is it shifted too far to the left? Too far to the right? Or (Goldilocks!) ‘just right’!

If you think of the pelvis and ribcage as being two stacking cubes, you want the ribcage to sit directly over the pelvis to avoid creating areas of strain. You also want to have them pointing in the same direction - not twisted relative to each other.

Just as with the other Proprioceptive Exercises, this is about developing feel; knowing when your body is correctly balanced. If you ride, you can carry this benefit of enhanced feel directly across to the saddle without needing to do any movements in the saddle. If you don’t ride, it is great for standing and seated posture.
